These are included in the price of your LUL Experience
All gratuities at our three locations in Kenya are taken care of so you don’t need to worry about tipping.
The local currency is the Kenya Shilling and US dollars are widely accepted. Visa and MasterCard are also widely accepted, American Express and Diners Club less so.
Hippo Point has mobile phone and 3G internet connection but the camps do not have any mobile reception. However we will ask you to restrict use of your phone, laptop and iPad in order to get the most involvement and enjoyment from your time with us in Kenya. We suggest checking emails just once or twice a day and literally switching off the rest of the time - we will ask you to leave your phone in your room.
Health insurance is essential and should include medical repatriation. Part of the African Medical and Research Foundation, the Flying Doctor Service have introduced a special Tourist Membership, which guarantees that any member injured or ill while on safari can call on a flying doctor for free air transport back to Nairobi. Flying Doctor membership is mandatory for Life Unlimited participants and we will automatically take out the $30 subscription on your behalf within the cost of your Experience. (www.amref.org).
You will witness spectacular sights in Kenya but stopping to take photographs every few minutes can ruin your enjoyment. We have taken care of that by having our very own professional photographer, Dominic Cunningham-Reid, present at all times. Dominic will take amazing photographs and videos to record every event and will make them freely available to you. Cameras are not banned, but we encourage you to take advantage of Dominic and not worry about it yourself.
The three Life Unlimited adventures in Kenya in 2012 have a minimum 21 year age requirement. This is to ensure that, in a very small group, everyone can participate at the same level of involvement. We also recommend that guests coming with us to Kenya should have a reasonable level of fitness so that they can take part in all activities. Please contact us if you have any questions about age and fitness. If you are interested in a Life Unlimited Experience with your children or grandchildren we can tailor a family adventure exclusively for you or with other families. Please contact us about for further information.
We suggest you bring jeans/long trousers, shorts, swimwear, long and short sleeved shirts/t-shirts, hat. Also, something warm – a jumper or jacket – as the evenings can be cool. Walking shoes are essential and we suggest you bring a spare pair. For yoga and stretching sessions you will need something loose and stretchy. Hippo Point is a beautiful and romantic location in which you may wish to dress up for dinner - but it isn’t mandatory.
We recommend you bring a small holdall/backpack just large enough to carry essentials for the two night stays at the tented camps.
Don’t forget sunglasses, sun protection cream (Hippo Point is at high altitude and the sun can be very strong), and a mosquito-repellant if you are vulnerable.
A laundry service is available a Hippo Point.
The food served at Hippo Point and at the camps is home-cooked and mostly made from home-grown organic supplies. Penina, our resident Hippo Point cook, accompanies us to Sarara Camp and Cottars Camp to ensure that the quality is excellent. We can cater for vegetarians, vegans and special diets if advised in advance. And although Hippo Point, Sarara and Cottars aren’t “dry” we do encourage Life Unlimited guests not to drink alcohol in order to get the very most from the experiences on offer. (We serve delicious non-alcoholic alternatives!)
Throughout Kenya, the hottest months are December to March. The coastal areas are tropical, with particularly high humidity in April and May, but tempered by monsoon winds. The lowlands are hot but mainly dry, while the highlands are more temperate with four seasons. Nairobi has a very pleasant climate throughout the year due to its altitude.
Please visit your doctor and check the Kenya High Commission website no less than one month before travelling for information on vaccinations and malaria tablets. Hippo Point is at high altitude, which reduces mosquito problems; the camp locations in the Maasai Mara and north Kenya may be more vulnerable.
The Kenya High Commission in the UK currently advises: “Immunisation against Yellow Fever and Cholera is recommended. Malaria prevention is strongly recommended.”
Visitors from most countries are required to apply for a visa to visit Kenya.
UK passport holders should go to http://www.kenyahighcommission.net for advice and an application form. Your passport must be valid for at least six months at the date of entry to Kenya with at least one unused page for endorsement. A single entry tourist visa costs £30 and takes 3 working days to process if presented at the counter of the High Commission. Postal applications take about 1 week from the date of receipt.
Non UK-passport holders should go to the website of their local Kenya High Commission.
